When students feel like they belong in their school and classrooms, they are more likely to be engaged and successful. A sense of belonging has been linked to higher grades, better test scores and improved social and emotional well-being. So, how can we create a sense of belonging for all students? By using technology and designing our classrooms with belonging in mind.

Designing Classrooms for Belonging

When we think about designing classrooms for belonging, we often think about the physical space. And while the physical space is important, it's not the only thing that matters. The social and emotional climate of the classroom is just as important. Technology can help us create a classroom climate where all students feel like they belong. Here are some ways to do that:

Make sure all students have equal access to technology.

This means having enough devices for every student in the class and making sure that students who don't have access at home are able to use them at school. Having equitable access to technology will help all students feel like they are a part of the class.

Use technology to connect students with each other.

Platforms like Google Classroom or Compass create a sense of community by giving everyone a place to share ideas and work together.

Create opportunities for all students to be leaders in the classroom.

Whether it's through starting a class blog or leading a discussion on Compass, giving all students a chance to shine will help them feel like they belong.

A sense of belonging is essential for student success. When students feel like they are valued members of their school community, they are more likely to engage with their learning and achieve their fullest potential. Technology can play a big role in creating a sense of belonging for all students. By using technology thoughtfully and intentionally, we can design classrooms that are inclusive and welcoming for everyone.
