Wellbeing: Tips for Parents + Families

School can be a big adjustment for families. Suddenly, you have to juggle homework, extra-curriculars, and social activities on top of everything else. It's important to remember that your wellbeing is just as important as your child's wellbeing. Here are a few tips to help you and your family adjust to the new school year:

1. Get organised

Create a family calendar or schedule to help everyone stay on track. Include time for homework, after-school activities, and family fun time.

2. Communicate

Keep the lines of communication open between you and your child. encourage them to come to you with any problems or worries they have.

3. Take breaks

Make sure everyone in the family takes some time for themselves every day. Whether it's reading a book, going for a walk, or taking a nap, taking some time to relax is crucial for maintaining wellbeing.

4. Be patient

Learning new things takes time. Give yourself and your family members grace as you all adjusting to the new school year. Celebrate the small victories along the way!

While it may seem like your child’s wellbeing is the only thing that matters during the school year, it’s important to remember that you are a vital part of the equation. Taking steps to improve your own mental health and wellbeing will benefit both you and your child. Make time for yourself each day – even if it’s just 10 or 15 minutes. Use this time to do something calming, such as reading, yoga, or meditation. Connect with friends and family members outside of school hours and remember you can always seek out professional help if you feel like you can’t manage your stress levels on your own.
